If you are looking for something that can literally be a life changing experience. Having the time to pull back
and enjoy nature is something that you will never forget. Backpacking is not only a hobby, but can also be a
demanding sport as well. However, there is no reason that anyone cannot partake in some of the easier trails
and get exercise to work themselves up to some of the more challenging backpacking trips.
When you are leaving on a backpacking trip, one of the first things that you are going to have to do is learn
how to pack your bag appropriately. You will learn very quickly that you will only want to pack what you
absolutely need. Carrying unnecessary items through rough trails will wear you down quickly and can end up
taking some of the enjoyment out of the trip.
If you have never been on a backpacking trip, it is a combination of hiking and camping. You will move during
the day and then make camp at night. That being the case, you are not only going to be carrying food supplies, you
are also going to have to carry all of your sleeping gear as well. Depending upon the backpacking site that you
choose, you could be moving from campsite to campsite, cabin to cabin or you may be totally on your own.
For the trip to be successful, everyone is going to have to work together. It is only natural that some people
will be stronger than others. That being the case, you may want them to carry the heavier items, but you can help
them out by carrying some of their daily gear or food supplies. This courtesy will go a long way and make the trip
much more enjoyable.
Another courtesy that must be extended if you are backpacker is one that is granted to the land you are
traveling on. It is common knowledge in this community that you take care of the land that you are traveling on.
There are others that went before you that took care of the land so that you could enjoy it and you need to do the
same thing to make sure that the people backpacking after you enjoy the same.
Safety should always be a concern when you are backpacking. With that in mind, you need to make sure that one of
your members is experienced in first aid and always has an eye out for everyone. This is a pretty heavy burden to
carry in that their main job will be to make sure that everyone’s pack is safe and that the route is well planned
and safe to travel. Ideally, this will be the person with the most backpacking experience.
There are plenty of reasons to start backpacking, but the one that is the most important to
people seems to be to enjoy the great outdoors. There is simply nothing better than getting outside and living
off of the land. If your next backpacking trip is going to be your first one, be prepared to fall in love with a
new hobby.
