Assure Yourself A Good Night’s Rest With The Right Sleep System On Your Backpacking Trip

by Ric Henderson

backpackingWhether you are going to a cabin or a campsite, you need to make sure that you have the right sleep system when you are going on your backpacking trip.  You are going to be exerting a lot of energy during the day, so you want to make sure that you get the proper rest so that you can get through each and every day and hit your target.

There are a lot of things that you need to take into consideration when you are selecting your sleep system and if there was ever anything that you took the time to make sure that you get it right, this is the one.  Don’t rush into something and don’t wait until the last minute.  This is far too important to the success of your trip to put little thought into.

The first thing that you need to decide on is your budget.  How much money you are going to spend is going to dictate what items you can look at.  While you may not be able get a sleep system with all the bells and whistles, you should still be able to find something that will fit well and assure you of a good night’s rest.  For example, you may not be able to afford a goose down system, but you can go with a top of the line synthetic that will get the job done.

The next consideration is where you are going to be backpacking and what time of the year.  If you only go during the summer in an area that never gets cold, you need not spend a lot of money on something that is going to keep you snuggly warm.  You are also going to need to know the lay of the land.  Are you going to be on the ground or will there be some type of flat surface?  This is important to know because it will decide the material and durability that you are going to need.

Speaking of comfort and durability, this is the next consideration.  If you have a bad back, you will obviously not want to be directly on the ground.  That being the case, you are going to need to purchase some type of air mattress as well.  Depending upon the setting, you may be able to get away with a sleeping pad, but that is a decision that you will have to make.

The final consideration is how much you can carry.  This is important because it will dictate what type of material you use.  Some sleep systems are made to be lightweight and if you have a heavy bag already, this is something that you will need to consider.  You can still get a warm bag that is lightweight, but you can rest assured that you are going to pay for it.

In order to get the best sleep system for you, you need to sit down and take all of these factors into consideration.  The more information you have, the better the decision that you will be able to make.  As we said, this is the one thing that you want to take your time deciding on.  Along with your actual backpack, it is the most important piece of equipment that you will have.
